Sub Floor Prep
Preparation is Key
When preparing a surface for new flooring, the choice between using a latex self-levelling compound and a plywood underlayment depends on the subfloor's condition and the finished floor's requirements. Latex screed, a mixture of liquid latex and cement, is poured to create a perfectly smooth, level, and durable finish over existing concrete or timber floors, making it ideal for rectifying unevenness and preparing for thin floor coverings like vinyl. In contrast, a plywood subfloor is constructed with sheets of plywood fastened over the existing floorboards to provide a solid, structural surface, which is particularly beneficial for uneven timber floors or for laying heavy tiles. While latex offers a rapid, thin, and seamless solution for correcting imperfections, plywood can provide a stronger, more stable foundation, especially for areas that need greater structural integrity.
