Underlay & Gripper
To prepare for a professional carpet fitting, the subfloor must be outfitted with both underlay and grippers to ensure a high-quality, long-lasting result. Carpet underlay is a cushioned layer of PU foam, rubber, or felt that is laid inside the perimeter of the room to provide essential thermal and sound insulation while acting as a shock absorber that can extend a carpet's lifespan by up to 50%. Surrounding this, carpet grippers (also known as tack strips) are narrow plywood strips with sharp, angled pins installed along side the skirting board at a approtiate distance1; these pins face the wall to catch the carpet backing, allowing it to be stretched taut to prevent unsightly ripples and shifting over time. Together, these components create a stable foundation that smooths out minor floor imperfections and enhances underfoot comfort, transforming the final carpet into a more luxurious and durable surface.
